Dionysius was one of the major figures in Greek and European history. He was a champion of the struggle between Europe and Carthage for Sicily, and was the first to bring the war into the enemy's territory. He transformed Syracuse into the most powerful city in the Greek world, and made it the seat of an empire stretching from Sicily across to Italy. Although this empire was technically a constitutional republic, in fact it was the first Greek empire which was in effect a monarchy; in this, Dionysius foreshadowed the accomplishments of Alexander the Great and beyond him of Augustus. He also foreshadowed these later rulers in being one of the first Greek rulers to be given divine honors during his lifetime, and he made innovations in military technique, such as siege engines, which became a standard feature of warfare under Alexander the Great and later generals.

THE MYTH OF CIANE & ANAPO: the Goddess Persephone plucking flowers at the shores of Lake Pergusa (Enna) was kidnapped by Hades, God of the underworld, in love with her. The nymph Ciane clinging to Hades' flying cart in a desperate attempt to restrain him was transformed by the god into Turquoise-colored waters (Cyanos in Greek means Turquoise). The young Anapo, in love with the nymph Ciane, seeing his girlfriend being liquefied also changed becoming a river; Anapo river ,still today, at the end of his path joins his love Ciane river before both pour into the Great Harbour of Syracuse.

PI Also known as the Constant of Archimedes, the PI is depicted with the Greek letter π, which is the initial of both the Greek word περίμετρος ("perimetros", perimeter), and that of Pythagoras. The first to use this name in 1706 was the English mathematician William Jones in the text A New Introduction to Mathematics. However, his story is far behind. In fact, the PI has been known for about 4000 years. The first to use it were the Babylonians, interpreting it as 3,125. Then it was the Egyptians (3,1605) and the Chinese. In 434 BC Anaxagoras used it to attempt to square the circle, but in the 3rd century BC Archimedes had the merit of approximating it to 3.1419 which we know today. On 14 March the PI day is celebrated all over the world, as in the Anglo-Saxon countries it corresponds to 3/14. On that day, mathematics competitions are organized and Archimedes' contributions are also remembered
